Golf in Ireland | It is a pleasure to have such a prestigious course on the GolfBirdie App. If you are travelling to Ireland to play golf Old Head has to be top of your list.

“The GolfBirdie App will be launched this summer!”

We approached the course on an amazing day with not a cloud in the sky and the sea looking like something out of a movie scene.

The whole atmosphere of this pristine links is a pleasure from the beginning from being greeted by the gate keeper upon arrival to being warmly welcomed by the starter and caddies on the first tee. Not forgetting the breath taking view on the drive to the club house.

Watch the HD drone video below, the full 18 holes will be available to view on the GolfBirdie App.

Old Head Golf Links is built on a 220-acre diamond of land, jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. The links and practice area occupy 180 acres and the remaining 40 acres of unspoilt cliff (rising in places to over 300 feet) frame the course.

Designed and constructed by a unique team, Ron Kirby – former designer at Jack Nicklaus’s Golf Design Services, Paddy Merrigan – Australian course architect and agronomist, Liam Higgins – one of Ireland’s best known golf professionals currently on the Seniors Tour, the late Eddie Hackett – former Irish golf professional and golf course designer, the late Dr. Joe Carr – Ireland’s most successful international amateur golfer and finally, Haulie O’Shea – building contractor.

Old Head, par 72, comprises five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s – stretching to over 7,200 yards from the tips, with a minimum of six tees per hole. Nine holes play along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.

Old Head Golf Links is designed as a walking course where Members and Guests are encouraged to walk the links with a Caddie. Old Head’s Caddie Programme is among one of the most extensive and professional worldwide.

The course is set up, depending on conditions, on a daily basis. Facilities include a warm up range with complimentary golf balls and a short game practice area. Old Head has a team of fully trained outside services staff to cater for your every need.

The level of service and beautiful setting is the perfect combination to allow you to have the perfect day of Golf.

Pokemon “Go” / “Golf” | Good or Bad news for Golfers?

If you haven’t already heard of the crazy sensation that is taking over the world again. “Pokemon” is back and coming to a course near you.

“Pokémon Go  is a free-to-playGPS based augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. It was initially released in July 2016. The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world.”

The Geo-locations of the Pokemon are scattered everywhere and it was only a matter of time before some popped up on local courses.

This could finally be the way to encourage younger generations to take up golf. Modern interactive apps are becoming an integral part of sports and something like this may be exactly what we need! Even youtube star @TheReevHD can’t wait to go golfing to discover more Pokemon!!

The interactive game involving walking around and adventuring to find your next Pokemon is a great idea by Nintendo, for once we have a game that encourages outdoor activity among kids.

At GolfBirdie we are using the same principle of trying to make Golf more fun and entertaining in the modern era. Using the combination of advanced technology, Drones and Apps we hope to provide Golfers young and old with an interactive experience that makes golf easier and more accessible.

Although some people have raised their concerns that it will lead to trespassing and the interruption of games……well you will always have the party poopers won’t we! Businesses that have been selected as Pokeshops where people can collect new characters are restricting this for paying customers only. This is liklley to be the case with courses and someone even suggested a Pokemon Green Fee hahaha

Well folks there you have it Pokemon GO is taking over the world and we just thought we would warn you in case you come across a “Pikachu” on the 9th this weekend. Its the calm before the storm for Europe as the game has not yet launched. However a few geniusis found out how to use the app in Dublin now!

Here you go the full details on how to get Pokemon GO in Ireland.

Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Oceanico Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

Holes 7, 8 and 9, average length par 4’s, offer a particular challenge as all three run alongside lakes, so golfers’ concentration and accuracy of tee-shots as well as approaches are vital. 3rd and 17th holes are both excellent par 3’s.

Two consecutive par 4’s, the 14th and 15th with large rolling greens, are tough hurdles to overcome at such a critical stage of the round, and then the finishing hole, 356m off the white tee, requires a precision drive to set up the approach to a two tier green benched into the hillside. Christy’s 18th hole brings the course to a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. ‘This hole is a humdinger; once you get up here and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.’

Course Overview

Designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m PAR 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.

“The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat,” pointed out Nick Faldo, during his visit in 2007.

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Nick said: “This was a very exciting project, which gave me a great opportunity to exploit my passion for design the same way I exploited my passion for playing. You have incredible views, beautiful undulating land and any time you have natural terrain like this, it is great fun to work with.”

“The real skill is that when you stand on the tee, the golf hole tells you what to do and if you do what it tells you there is reward but if you don’t you’re penalised. The back nine is quite hilly, which is fantastic because we’ve got some great views to complement the course.”

“I like my courses to be challenging to whoever plays them. There might be easy holes in some places, but they are a challenge because you have to think about them, and that is what I am after. The best compliment you can get in the design business is when players come off the course and say ’wow, that was a challenge,’ and that’s just what I planned at Amendoeira Golf Resort.”

The Island, host to The Open regional qualifying, has been visited to many big names over the years such as Dan Marino and @McIlroyRory

The Island provides the perfect Open warm up with its traditional links style and long rough!  It is a course not for the light hearted, but a challenge in itself that all golfer must experience. A true links course. Once ranked in the “Top 100 Golf courses in the world”.

In September 1887 four men rowed across the channel which separates the North Dublin village of Malahide from the spur of land to the north known locally as the Island. Their mission was to survey the wilderness and assess its suitably as a golf links.” @islandgolfclub

De ChambBryson DeChambeau | Science & Golf

DeChambeau, has changed the way people view the game of golf. With his mind boggling lingo and crazy facts he has amazed all of us. He has opened the game up to a new level of analysis and precision. You can see what we mean below. In the video Byrson gets his hands on the original stimpmeter, and then…..well we will leave it up to the scientist to explain.

Bryson DeChambeau

Amazing Dechanbeau Fact!

“Unlike his rivals’, all of DeChambeau’s irons and wedges – the workhorse clubs that advance the ball from the fairway to the green – have the same 37-1/2-inch length. Equally striking, all the metal heads of those clubs weigh the same amount, just under 10 ounces.

Irons and wedges in a typical set of clubs vary from 36 inches to 39 inches in length and their heads from 8-1/2 to 10-1/4 ounces in weight.” Read the full article here.
