Hogs Head Golf Club Exclusive preview | Ireland’s next big course

The golf course architecture firm of Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ II) is nearing completion of Hogs Head Golf Club, an original design adjacent to the scenic shoreline cliffs south of Waterville, Ireland. The unique layout will be unveiled in August 2017. But we have got some exclusive pictures just for you!

Hogs Head

A headlands course surrounded by farmland, Hogs Head Golf Club boasts views of both the Atlantic seascape and the tallest mountains in the country – called Macgillicuddy’s Reeks – while incorporating a salmon-nurturing stream that dominates strategy on the first nine holes.

The legend Matt Ginella has played the course and dropped some exclusive details about the next great Irish Links.

“Hogs Head is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, which is the new neighbor to Waterville Golf Links in the Southwest of Ireland. Jones worked with 200 acres to create a heathland course (a links/parkland hybrid) perched above the Waterville House and a quaint town of 450 residents.

There is a membership option (€3,500/year, no initiation), and there will be limited outside play (about 3,000 non-member rounds/year at €250/round). Several spectacular holes are either along a rushing river, the ocean, or the surrounding mountains where local farmers can be heard calling their cows in for dinner. Clubhouse is open for lunch and dinner to anyone booking a reservation in advance. Although this summer is a “soft opening,” expect something more official and extravagant in the near future. Hogs Head, it get’s better!

The intent is for Hogs Head to pose firm, fast, links-like conditions that reward both an aerial or ground game, depending on the ever-changing coastal climate.

“We provided multiple choices of how to play many of the holes, given the weather of the day,” Jones said. “It will be different every day with that hidden dimension of variable winds.”

The heart and soul of Jones’ design are captured in the five par 3s, naturally spectacular and diverse as they defend par with the river, the cliffs, the wind and the sea. The balance of the golf course is a supporting cast of classic characters that includes a Biarritz green, as well as other nuances that rekindle the spirit of golf architecture’s grand masters.

“The owner’s vision is to create a championship caliber golf course equal to Ireland’s unsurpassed passion for the game of golf, a passion we wholeheartedly share,” Jones said. “Our working motto has been, ‘built by friends for friends for fun.’ And we know this course will deliver the fun.”

Top 5 Golf Holes in Ireland | Watch a drone video of every hole

The Top courses is always a big topic in the world of golf. So we have decided to choose the Top 5 Golf holes in Ireland, that we have filmed over the last few months.

If you ahve any suggestions for the Top 5 Golf Holes in Ireland contact us via twitter @golfbirdie_app

5) Carne Golf Links, Bellmullet 18th Hole..

LOG ‘ A FOLA – THE BLOODY HALLOW This par 5 finishing hole has breathtaking views of Blacksod Bay and the Atlantic from the tee. The hollow on the right of the tee is an ancient burial ground. The valley in front of the green is often the burial place for a promising card.

At GolfBirdie, we want to showcase golf courses around the world through our revolutionary new app. Our app presents golf courses in a whole new light, making it easy for golf clubs to promote their courses and facilities and for players to get a real understanding of what each course has to offer them.

4) The Island Golf Club, 14th Hole

“The Old Club House” where the founding memebers would come by boat from nearby Malahide.

A very intimidating hole because of the narrow fairway with a lateral water hazard on the right. It’s best to aim for the edge of the left rough off the tee which will throw the ball into the centre of the fairway. Missing the fairway on the right forces the ball into the water hazard.

3) The K Club, Palmer Ryder Cup course 16th hole

A beautifully constructed par five, players must respect this hole at all times as the margin for error around the green is very small indeed.

A significant hole in the 2006 Ryder Cup. Re-live the 2006 Ryder Cup on this amazing course with the video below.

2) Waterville Golf Links Hole  3

The Third at waterville is a challanging hole with water all along the right hand side. “Not good for those of you who hit a little slice” (most amateur golfers). The view from the tee is spectacular with the blue of the Athlantic ocean and the view of the mountains in the distance. A real dream for any fan of links golf.

Less than  1% of all golf courses in the world are “True Links” courses. 85% of which are located in Brittian and Ireland. Waterville Golf Links is No.1 in Ireland, while Royal County Down is No.1 is neighbouring Northern Ireland.

1) Old Head Kinsale 12th Hole

Old Head, par 72, comprises five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s – stretching to over 7,200 yards from the tips, with a minimum of six tees per hole. Nine holes play along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.
