The Oyster Tavern has been a part of the Cork landscape for hundreds of years.

The earliest trace of the house being a tavern is dated to 1800. In 1828, Widow Stokes held the premises under lease from Edward Barrett, a Publican, and Richard Fitzgerald, a brewer, the property then being described as ‘a plot of ground in Cenderberry’s lane’ (now Market Lane). http://oystertavern.ie/reservations/

Luttrellstown Castle Golf Club

Golf at Luttrellstown Castle

Luttrellstown Castle Golf & Country Club is situated within the 567 acre walled estate of Luttrellstown Castle, only 20 minutes’ drive to the centre of Dublin City and Dublin Airport. The 18-hole championship parkland course has undergone a complete redevelopment – all of the 18 holes has been modified and enhanced. The Golf & Country Club is located on the eastern side of the estate and is bounded by mature woodlands. The natural contours of the land have been cleverly used to maintain the integrity of this ancient landscape

The course measures over 7347 yards from the championship tees, making it a worthy test for golfers of the highest standard. Water is featured on 11 holes, accurate tee shots determine where and how much of the hazard must be crossed. The view from the 15th  tee down across the Liffey Valley and Strawberry Beds is spectacular, while the par four 2nd  presents visitors with the first glimpse of the castle. A view of a romantic Doric Temple and quaint Boathouse also adds to the appeal of this hole. The stretch between the 12th  and  16th  holes is the most demanding on the course as it is here most games are won or lost.

Full practice facilities are available, including chipping and putting greens. Expert golf tuition is also available from residential professionals.

The beauty of golf in Ireland

“WOW,” was all Tiger Woods could say as the early morning fog cleared to reveal the 15th tee at The Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale, County Cork He has a point: humpback whales splashing in the swirling waters, swooping seabirds and scampering hares – you’re at one with nature’s immense power on Ireland’s links. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the ball… Someone who will help keep your eyes on the fairways is the caddy. They know the fairways best, save you plenty of shots, and will probably be the best four hours’ conversation you’ll ever have on a golf course!

“I had such a great time in Ireland that I’ve been coming over ever since.”

Of course, it’s not all over after the 18th. The late US Open and US PGA Champion Payne Stewart felt right at home when he visited the 19th hole in Waterville – The Butler Arms Hotel: “We get into the pub and get around a piano,” said Stewart of his post-round routine. “I bring out my harmonica and the next thing you know it’s about 4am!” You see, finishing a round of golf doesn’t mark the end of the day in Ireland. Round here we always carry on to the 19th.

No licence or membership is required to play golf in Ireland. All you have to do is find the courses, book your tee times and turn up – or choose an operator to arrange it all for you.

There are fewer than 200 links golf courses in the world – Ireland has 50 of them.

In Ireland during summer, days are long – it’s light at 6.30am and doesn’t get dark until after 10pm, so you have plenty of playing time.

You won’t need a tuxedo in Ireland, but there are dress codes – smart casual works.

Some of my fondest memories of great golfing holes in the world, include the number four and five holes at Lahinch.

Don’t be afraid to mix things up. Invite a member or two to join your group and have a fun fourball…loser buys drinks at the 19th hole!

Don’t just check out a course’s signature hole – check out its history. In Killeen Castle (former Solheim Cup host), County Meath, for instance, your play was dictated by the fairies. Designer Jack Nicklaus wanted to tuck the 12th green into the left, but it would have meant cutting down a hawthorn tree, considered in Ireland to be a fairy tree… the tree was left intact for fear of bad luck and so a big drive leading to a small green is where the magic now happens

Golf Courses Damaged by Hurricane

Over 360,000 properties are without power, including golf clubs and three people have died as Hurricane Ophelia sweeps in over Ireland with damaging gusts and heavy rainfall.

It’s feared that a number of courses on the west coast will be badly damaged. Golf courses don’t do too well in hurricanes.

Hurricane Ophelia could cause up to €1.5bn  worth of damage to Ireland according to a leading disaster analyst.

Ophelia, which is set to be one of the most powerful storms to reach Ireland in over 50 years, will reach winds speeds of up to 150kmph in parts of the country.

The hurricane is expected to cause power outages as well as disruption to businesses and is estimated to cause €1.5bn in damage. It had previously been estimated to cost around €676m in damage, but this figure has been more than doubled due to the storm’s intensity holding up over night.

Lets see how the courses hold up!
