The beauty of golf in Ireland

“WOW,” was all Tiger Woods could say as the early morning fog cleared to reveal the 15th tee at The Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale, County Cork He has a point: humpback whales splashing in the swirling waters, swooping seabirds and scampering hares – you’re at one with nature’s immense power on Ireland’s links. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the ball… Someone who will help keep your eyes on the fairways is the caddy. They know the fairways best, save you plenty of shots, and will probably be the best four hours’ conversation you’ll ever have on a golf course!

“I had such a great time in Ireland that I’ve been coming over ever since.”

TIGER WOODS

Of course, it’s not all over after the 18th. The late US Open and US PGA Champion Payne Stewart felt right at home when he visited the 19th hole in Waterville – The Butler Arms Hotel: “We get into the pub and get around a piano,” said Stewart of his post-round routine. “I bring out my harmonica and the next thing you know it’s about 4am!” You see, finishing a round of golf doesn’t mark the end of the day in Ireland. Round here we always carry on to the 19th.

No licence or membership is required to play golf in Ireland. All you have to do is find the courses, book your tee times and turn up – or choose an operator to arrange it all for you.

There are fewer than 200 links golf courses in the world – Ireland has 50 of them.

In Ireland during summer, days are long – it’s light at 6.30am and doesn’t get dark until after 10pm, so you have plenty of playing time.

You won’t need a tuxedo in Ireland, but there are dress codes – smart casual works.

Some of my fondest memories of great golfing holes in the world, include the number four and five holes at Lahinch.

PHIL MICKELSON

Don’t be afraid to mix things up. Invite a member or two to join your group and have a fun fourball…loser buys drinks at the 19th hole!

Don’t just check out a course’s signature hole – check out its history. In Killeen Castle (former Solheim Cup host), County Meath, for instance, your play was dictated by the fairies. Designer Jack Nicklaus wanted to tuck the 12th green into the left, but it would have meant cutting down a hawthorn tree, considered in Ireland to be a fairy tree… the tree was left intact for fear of bad luck and so a big drive leading to a small green is where the magic now happens

Tiger’s back after 466 days

“I’m ready to go,” Woods told USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio on the range at Albany Golf Club on Sunday.

“I have way more shots now, because I’ve played way more golf,” said Woods of his decision to push back his return from the Safeway Open in October to now. “I only had a handful of shots back then. And you just saw a session where I hit everything. And I had control of everything. I can hit all the shots now, on call.”

When a player decides to attack a tour bag…

Our favourite hole is the 7th Par 3 Index 16, a beautiful little hole over water, with the atlantic right behind the tee box. This course has a great links feel with the sea but also has some really good parkland type water features. Golf in Ireland | It is a pleasure to have such a prestigious course on the GolfBirdie App. If you are travelling to Ireland to play golf Old Head has to be top of your list.

“The GolfBirdie App will be launched this summer!”

We approached the course on an amazing day with not a cloud in the sky and the sea looking like something out of a movie scene.

The whole atmosphere of this pristine links is a pleasure from the beginning from being greeted by the gate keeper upon arrival to being warmly welcomed by the starter and caddies on the first tee. Not forgetting the breath taking view on the drive to the club house.

Watch the HD drone video below, the full 18 holes will be available to view on the GolfBirdie App.

Old Head Golf Links is built on a 220-acre diamond of land, jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. The links and practice area occupy 180 acres and the remaining 40 acres of unspoilt cliff (rising in places to over 300 feet) frame the course.

Designed and constructed by a unique team, Ron Kirby – former designer at Jack Nicklaus’s Golf Design Services, Paddy Merrigan – Australian course architect and agronomist, Liam Higgins – one of Ireland’s best known golf professionals currently on the Seniors Tour, the late Eddie Hackett – former Irish golf professional and golf course designer, the late Dr. Joe Carr – Ireland’s most successful international amateur golfer and finally, Haulie O’Shea – building contractor.

Old Head, par 72, comprises five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s – stretching to over 7,200 yards from the tips, with a minimum of six tees per hole. Nine holes play along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.

Old Head Golf Links is designed as a walking course where Members and Guests are encouraged to walk the links with a Caddie. Old Head’s Caddie Programme is among one of the most extensive and professional worldwide.

The course is set up, depending on conditions, on a daily basis. Facilities include a warm up range with complimentary golf balls and a short game practice area. Old Head has a team of fully trained outside services staff to cater for your every need.

The level of service and beautiful setting is the perfect combination to allow you to have the perfect day of Golf.

Oceanico O´Connor Jnr.

Golf Course Drone video

Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Oceanico Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

Holes 7, 8 and 9, average length par 4’s, offer a particular challenge as all three run alongside lakes, so golfers’ concentration and accuracy of tee-shots as well as approaches are vital. 3rd and 17th holes are both excellent par 3’s.

Two consecutive par 4’s, the 14th and 15th with large rolling greens, are tough hurdles to overcome at such a critical stage of the round, and then the finishing hole, 356m off the white tee, requires a precision drive to set up the approach to a two tier green benched into the hillside. Christy’s 18th hole brings the course to a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. ‘This hole is a humdinger; once you get up here and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.’

Oceanico Faldo Course

Course Overview

Designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m PAR 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.

“The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat,” pointed out Nick Faldo, during his visit in 2007.

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Nick said: “This was a very exciting project, which gave me a great opportunity to exploit my passion for design the same way I exploited my passion for playing. You have incredible views, beautiful undulating land and any time you have natural terrain like this, it is great fun to work with.”

“The real skill is that when you stand on the tee, the golf hole tells you what to do and if you do what it tells you there is reward but if you don’t you’re penalised. The back nine is quite hilly, which is fantastic because we’ve got some great views to complement the course.”

“I like my courses to be challenging to whoever plays them. There might be easy holes in some places, but they are a challenge because you have to think about them, and that is what I am after. The best compliment you can get in the design business is when players come off the course and say ’wow, that was a challenge,’ and that’s just what I planned at Amendoeira Golf Resort.”

How to improve golf game at home? | The quickest way to lower your score

Lower your score by 3 shots per round! Improve your golf game in minutes! Let us show you how to improve golf game at home or in the office.

Technology has been a part of the game of golf for quite some time now. Well always really, since the first clubs were made they were considered high tech in their day! So inherently there has been a lot of forward thinking and innovation in the game.

How to improve golf game at home!

Everything from swing aids to golf ball finders. All of which try to improve the average golfers game, and do.

However one of the biggest problems for golfers is not knowing their way around the course or not being familiar with it….especially when traveling to play.

Course management is one of the most neglected aspects of a golfer’s game.

Most players concentrate on hitting the ball well, but forget that the purpose of the game of golf is to ultimately attain the lowest possible score, not to show off perfect shots on every single stroke.

In other words, depending on the course and the hole you are about to play, it is sometimes safer (and wiser) to play for a bogey than trying to go for a one in a million shot. This ability to always play the right shot at the right time is what makes a successful golfer.

At last, there is a solution to this problem, which could dramatically reduce your score. How to improve golf game at home? …..with the GolfBirdie App.

GolfBirdie gives you a birds eye drone video of every hole, guiding you around the course. Allowing you to improve your positioning, course management and helping you avoid hazards.

For top level golfers and pros, the usual practice is to visit a course a few days before a competition and play a practice round.

Speaking from my experience playing at a high level we used to play two even three balls on each hole because we didn’t know where the best position was until we played the hole.

With GolfBirdie, you can use the HD Drone videos in a practice round to eliminate this and allow you to concentrate on your yardages and other info.
