“Off the tee, the wide fairways have strategic bunkering, mature hardwood trees, and contoured slopes which place an emphasis on shot placement. While not overly difficult in appearance, this firm and fast sand capped layout requires the proper line and angle of attack to score. The subtle greens in the latest Pure Distinction bentgrass with full Sub Air system feature unique shapes that create a variety of hole locations requiring careful thought and club selection on the approach shots.”

Early Years: 1990-2000

The JP McManus Pro-Am teed off for the first time almost 30 years ago in 1990 at Limerick Golf Club attracting many of Europe’s top professional golfers of the time, including Philip Walton, Christy O’Connor Jnr, Des Smyth, Brian Barnes, Gordon Brand Jnr, Bill Longmuir, Paul Way, Eamonn Darcy, and Richard Boxall. The 42 teams competing consisted of one professional and three other players, and they helped to raise almost €1.2 million for local charities in Limerick.

The succeeding event took place five years later in 1995 when the European Tour became involved with the management of the golf tournament. This augmented the stature and profile of the Pro-Am amongst European and US professionals as well as the spectator public. The event attracted many more professional golfers from the highest echelons including three outstanding members of the US PGA Seniors Tour – Jim Colbert, Bob Murphy and Tom Wargo.

Many of the younger professionals who also participated went on to become some of the biggest names in the sport such as Michael Campbell, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Paul McGinley and Andrew Coltart. The funds raised on that occasion increased to almost €4 million.

In 2000, the Pro-Am was once again hosted at Limerick Golf Club. Over fifteen thousand people enjoyed two fantastic days of golf, witnessing none other than the world’s then Number 1 Tiger Woods securing victory. The golfing legend fended off some of the world’s greatest players including World No 2 David Duval, Stuart Appleby, Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjørn, Lee Janzen and Mark O’Meara to name a few. Among other sports personalities to also compete in the tournament were Alex Ferguson, Martin O’Neill, Keith Wood, Gary Lineker and Eddie Jordan. The tournament that year saw a significant rise in funds raised, this time coming to €19.8 million.

“In the past, most players have travelled to Ireland to play the wild Atlantic Links layouts. Now Ireland can also offer the finest inland parkland traditional style layout, with an emphasis on strategic shot placement, set on the grounds of one of the finest manor hotels in the world.”

“However, as every great golfer knows, it’s all about the numbers, so here they are: • 12,055 square metres of Pure Distinction bentgrass USGA putting surfaces • New perennial ryegrass tees and fairways • 170 acres of low-cut sand capped grass, wall to wall, with no rough in play • Sub Air systems in all greens to remove moisture thru vacuum pumps to maintain firm conditions every day • 77,000 linear meters of gravel trenches and perforated pipes • 41 capillary concrete strategic bunkers with the finest Scottish sand • 180,000 tonnes of sand • 1291 sprinkler heads • 127 newly planted mature trees • 77 new tee boxes measuring 10,777 square metres • 6600 square metres of closely-mown teeing area on our new practice facility • 12,055 square metres of Pure Distinction bentgrass putting surfaces • 17,003 square metres of A4 bentgrass approach surfaces • 6641 square metres of bunkers • 50 Greenskeepers • 170,000 square metres of perfectly manicured fairway • Water features on 14 holes • 1 River Maigue.” ***All images and information owned by Adare Manor https://www.adaremanor.com/golf/***

Tiger’s back after 466 days

“I’m ready to go,” Woods told USA Today’s Steve DiMeglio on the range at Albany Golf Club on Sunday.

“I have way more shots now, because I’ve played way more golf,” said Woods of his decision to push back his return from the Safeway Open in October to now. “I only had a handful of shots back then. And you just saw a session where I hit everything. And I had control of everything. I can hit all the shots now, on call.”
